Atremaru Resort & Spa

A leafy green oasis swaying in the gentle tropical breeze, Atremaru Resort is a complete disconnection from technology and modern life. As we approached the entrance along a winding dirt road, the trappings of our daily grind in the western world are immediately detached from our beings, and what awaits us is a world of peace for the mind, body and soul.

Atremaru Resort & Spa is an incredible natural resort, designed and built on the foundations of environmental sustainability. Clever engineering and thoughtful architecture mean that Atremaru is able to leave no environmental footprint. Solar panels provide power, and rainwater catchment systems supply all that is needed. The resort is staffed by a dedicated team of people from the local community, ensuring social and environmental sustainability. This is the kind of business the world needs more of.

The grounds surrounding Atremaru Resort are peaceful and lush. The wind swirls around the tree tops as you sit high on the hillside watching tropical birds fly by. The local flora and fauna bring a sense of peace and comfort, and the relaxing hum of the jungle sings you to sleep at night. Each treehouse is designed with simplicity and function in mind, each with a wrap-around terrace that makes outdoor living very appealing. You’ll find everything you need for your stay, including drinking water and tea and coffee on the terrace. Numerous hammocks and chairs offer a variety of places to relax with a book, or to share special moments with friends and family.

Relax and Unwind at Atremaru Resort

The shade of the trees and the gentle sea breeze keep you comfortable through the day, but should the temperature spike you can always retreat to the rainwater swimming pool. Large and well shaded, you can spend the day going between the water and the pool side without having to worry about the intense midday sun.

If you choose to go a little further afield, you’ll discover one of the most serene beaches anywhere in the Philippines…

Follow the foot paths down the hill and you’ll find yourself at a fork in the path, a subtle sign points you in the right direction. Passing some grazing cows, rice paddies and local homes, and you’ll come to the final narrow sandy path. The lush greenery opens up to the beach. Calm and tranquil, without a soul in sight, this is what dreams are made of. We spent hours here enjoying the warm waters and soaking up the sunshine. Islands in the distance and fluffy clouds are the perfect back drop for your dream vacation.

Returning to the resort, you’ll feel like you’ve had a truly special experience. A stop at the restaurant for some delicious food, and you’re ready to wrap up the day. The meals are tasty and home-cooked, with local and western favourites. As the sun sets through the trees and the night draws in, head back to your treehouse by torch light and soak up the sounds of the jungle as it truly comes to life. Your treehouse is now a cosy retreat with warm lighting and a cooling fan, setting you up for a peaceful nights rest until you wake to watch the sunrise in the morning.

Mornings at Atremaru Resort are equally magical. Beginning the day with a healthy breakfast will get you set up for another day of adventure or relaxation. If you wish to venture out around the island, rental scooters are available on site and offer a convenient and fun way to get around. With endless hidden beaches and viewpoints, and many villages to explore, there’s enough to keep you busy for as long as you can keep yourself away from the serenity of Atremaru Resort & Spa.

Castaway Resort | Koh Lipe, Thailand

Beach Cabanas at Castaway Resort, Koh Lipe, Thailand

Castaway Resort, Koh Lipe

Often referred to as the Maldives of Thailand, Koh Lipe Island is a beach lovers paradise with powder white sand and crystal clear water. Since it’s a little further out of the way than many other Thai islands, not as many people venture down to it, meaning that the island has managed to maintain some of its local culture and small island vibes.

Of course, when coming to an island like Koh Lipe you’ll want to stay right on the beachfront to make the most of the unbeatable ocean views. Castaway Resort has an idyllic set-up, with wooden treehouse style bungalows with the beach right on the doorstep.

Beachfront Bungalows

Settle right into island life with your very own beachfront bungalow. Made from locally sourced natural materials, these quaint two-story wooden beach huts have everything you need for a comfortable stay. The bedroom upstairs offers fantastic views, whether you’re on the beachfront or in the garden. Colourful hand-woven fabrics add a flare of local culture, whilst the artwork on the walls can be purchased to support the local community. Though simple in design and decoration, the bungalows are perfect to retreat to after a day in the sun, complete with ceiling fans and mosquito nets to ensure a restful nights sleep.

Visiting Koh Yao Noi? Check out the sustainable tree house retreat Island Hideout for en epic stay.

Island Vibes

Castaway Resort Koh Lipe has the layout of a small village, with a maze of sandy paths leading to each individual bungalow. This sense of community reflects the relaxed and sociable feel of the resort, whilst the design of the huts themselves creates privacy. Soak up the peace and tranquillity from the hammocks on your front porch, with a laid back or seated option to suit your mood at the time. It’s the ideal spot to sink into a good book, or simply to shelter from the midday sun under the palm trees that tower above the rooftops.

Step down from your front porch and into the soft white sand below, and follow the trail to the beach just steps away. Down on the beachfront, the Castaway Restaurant is a vibrant place to hangout at any time of day. From breakfast through to late night snacks, there’s something on the menu for everyone. And the awesome drink specials everyday during Happy Hour, it’s the perfect place to catch up after a day of scuba diving, snorkelling, or taking a boat tour around the islands.

Sunrise & Sunsets

Being on the East side of Koh Lipe, Castaway Resort catches the most perfect sunrise everyday. As the sky comes alive and the light beams down onto the water, the warm golden hues of sunrise bring the beach to life. Early morning yoga classes are available for those who like to start their day with some movement, and with a view like this, it’s hard not to be tempted.

The West side of the island is the place to be to catch an epic sunset. Just a 10 minute walk from Castaway Resort, this long stretch of white sand welcomes the islands inhabitants and visitors to soak up the last light of the day. As the boats dock on the shore to signal the end of another day, the sky puts on an impressive display of pink, purple and orange light that bleeds into the sea behind the island.

In short, the island is definitely worth the journey. Its laid back island vibes, a simple and rustic lifestyle are enough to make you pause, slow down and enjoy the ride. If this sounds like just your speed, then be sure to stay at Castaway Resort Koh Lipe.

La Casita de Baclayon

Tucked away on the hill above a small town in Bohol stands the marvel that is La Casita de Baclayon. It’s a lovely family run guesthouse offering the warmest hospitality and home comforts. Rarely will you find a place with such a warm welcome and lasting charm. Designed and built with sustainability in mind, this beautiful guesthouse boasts high ceilings and an open plan concept, with spacious living quarters that really bring the outside in.

In Harmony with Nature

Made with natural and locally sourced materials, the building blends seamlessly with it’s lush green surroundings capped with cogon thatch roofs and spectacular wooden beams throughout. Two large indoor pools with circulating water keep the house naturally cool, working with the sea breeze to ventilate throughout.

The two guest rooms at La Casita are spacious, light and inviting. The suites are tastefully decorated with local Filipino art pieces, hand woven fabrics and intricate wood carvings. Open bathrooms invite the sea breeze to roll over the bamboo and keep the space cool, whilst sunlight streams in from the outside maintaining the bright and open feel that flows throughout the house.

An abundance of outdoor space invites you to relax and enjoy the warmth of the sun and the gentle sea breeze that rolls up the hill and cools the house. As the sun dips down into the sea below the forest, the golden hour light floods into La Casita giving a warmth and serene glow. My advice, settle down with a book in the Thai style garden den and listen as the forest comes alive.

Every aspect of the design and build pays tribute to the planet’s natural resources, working in harmony with nature to be as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. This rooftop space offers unbeatable views of Ao Nang and the sea beyond.

The pool is large enough to swim lengths, and the swim up bar is ideal for those who want a mid morning smoothie, an afternoon snack, or even a cheeky cocktail.

Part of Anana’s sustainable endeavour includes an onsite vegetable garden, which provides fresh vegan farm produce for the hotel restaurant and café. Furthermore, the vegetable garden has been built in such a way that it can be enjoyed as a tranquil retreat. Pathways wind through the vegetables patches, taking you through beautiful bamboo structures that create pockets of shade. One such construct is used as a yoga shala, allowing you to take your practice in the peaceful gardens.

Good for the mind, body and soul, Anana’s wellness centre offers a range of treatments including a fantastic traditional Thai massage. A rare Himalayan Pink Salt room is the perfect healing space, which generates negative ions and helps to counterbalance the influx of positive ions from all of the electronic devices we have come to use daily. It’s the perfect way to relax and de-stress.

Each day, guests are invited to start the morning with sunrise yoga on the rooftop. Unrivalled views of the surrounding limestone cliffs become breathtaking as the sun rises above them. For those seeking to carry on the zen, afternoon meditation practices take place daily as well.

The Story of Sea Dance

“I was standing on the beach looking out to the water and the waves swayed back and forth, it was like the sea was dancing for me” explained Poy, the designer and owner of the property, as he told the story of how Sea Dance Resort came to be. “We wanted to create somewhere that people can really be themselves, to find the rhythm of their own unique beat.” It’s all about letting go and unwinding, finding tranquility in nature, away from the everyday.

Nature is respected here, from the power of the sun and the sea, to the abundance of the local land. “We used as many locally sourced and natural products as possible throughout the resort.” The myriad of hand crafted bamboo structures and roof thatch made from tree leaves reflects the elegance of sustainable design. “The aim was always to blend in with the surroundings, to protect the land and the community, and to be as sustainable as possible.” And you can feel this passion as you walk around the resort, following small winding paths that hug the curves of the earth below, breathing fresh air from the vast variety of plants and trees, and watching the butterflies float by.

The Island Hideout are proud to have started a number of projects that support the local community. The staff, who feel more like family, all live locally on the island. Take a walk through the jungle trail to the secret Hideout beach, an untouched haven of warm turquoise water and soft sandy beach, the edges shaded by overhanging palm trees. Hideout’s beach clean-up project entices you to fill a trash bag with washed up plastics whilst you’re there. Bring it back up to the Hideout and they’ll thank you with an amazing cocktail on the house to enjoy while taking in the spectacular sunset.

The saying “it’s the people that make a place” stands all too relevant at The Island Hideout. What is already an incredible property and experience is further enhanced because of the beautiful people who work there. Not only that, but the Hideout seems to draw people who all have a shared appreciation for nature, for adventure, and for relaxation.
